CS and Bioengineering at University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor's) and Robotics at University of Pennsylvania (Master's)
Open House Time: Monday, December 21 @ 11 AM
Interests: I am interested in machine learning for healthcare and medical applications and have done research in both bioengineering and machine learning (cyber-physical systems) settings. I am currently applying to PhD programs and I have some experience in the medical device industry through multiple summer internships.
Chemical Engineering B.S. and Data Science Minor at UC Berkeley
Open House Time: Monday, December 21 @ 1 PM
Interests: I am interested in climate change and sustainable energy, and I'm currently applying to PhD programs for chemical engineering. For the last year and a half I've been working as a research affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, where my research is in electrochemical energy conversion, focusing on hydrogen fuel cells and sustainable hydrogen production. I'm also interested in applying machine learning to electrochemistry research.
Mechanical Engineering and Russian Studies at Carnegie Mellon University
Open House Time: Tuesday, December 22 @ 11 AM
Interests: I've done engineering internships with Collins Aerospace and NASA (though not in particularly glamorous roles), have a lot of extracurricular project experience with composite materials, and am currently applying to Master's programs in aerospace engineering, so I can talk a bit about that process if anyone is thinking that far ahead. Mechanical engineering is a lot broader than a lot of people think, and I'd be happy to talk about the many different directions MechE studies can take and potential career paths.
Robotics PhD at CMU, graduated EECS & Applied Math B.S at Berkeley in 2020
Open House Time: Tuesday, December 22 @ 2 PM
Interests: Happy to talk about EECS/CS/Math, undergraduate research (spent ~3 semesters during research in reinforcement learning), and applying to graduate school. I was also pretty involved in teaching (TAed for 4 semesters) in undergrad. Generally happy to chat about Berkeley and life as a whole!
BS. Chemical Engineering @ Northwestern University, current PhD student @ Berkeley
Open House Time: Tuesday, December 22 @ 3:30 PM (Come to one open house, stay for two!)
Interests: My work lies in the intersection of material science, chemical engineering, and machine learning for novel materials discovery. I started at Emory University as an undergrad, thinking I was going to be pre-med, but quickly changed into chemistry, then transferred schools to Northwestern to do chemical engineering instead. Former employers include Dow Chemical and a little-known startup called Kebotix.
Computer Science and History at Caltech
Open House Time: Tuesday, December 22 @ 4:15 PM
Interests: I work as a software engineer at Affinity and formerly interned at Facebook, Doordash, and other smaller startups. In college, I did research in computer vision, a thesis about democracies, directed Hacktech, and opened a small restaurant. Go take a look at roberteng.me if you really want to dig deep into my projects/experiences. I'm interested in startups, the intersection of government and tech, starting things, meeting people, and life.
Bioengineering (B.S.) and CS (minor) at UC Berkeley
Open House Time: Wednesday, December 23 @ 11 AM
Interests: I am primarily interested in computationally modeling language cognition using machine learning and am currently applying to PhD programs in that area. My past research experience includes modeling the neural basis of behavior in bats and analyzing the effects of leg loss in insects (with applications in biomimetic robots). I've also done internships at Sandstone Diagnostics and Genentech. Aside from that, I've been involved in Berkeley's new student orientation, the Bioengineering Honor Society, and have been a TA for multiple classes.
Currently MD student at Boston University, graduated Medical Sciences B.A. and Computer Science Minor at BU
Open House Time: Wednesday, December 23 @ 3 PM
Interests: Happy to answer any questions for students interested in applying for accelerated medical programs, medicine or science majors. I'm part of BU's Seven-Year Medical Program, so I can definitely talk about my experience with it. I am interested in medical research, specifically applying machine learning to medical records/imaging. If you have any questions about medicine, this is the place for you!
EECS at UC Berkeley
Open House Time: Wednesday, December 23 @ 4 PM
Interests: I study EECS at Berkeley, and I'm currently interested in integrated circuits. I have also taken some courses in systems, computer architecture, and AI, so feel free to ask about those. If there is sufficient interest, I will mentor a fun project where we will build a multiplayer game and learn how to deploy it using Docker/Kubernetes. Languages involved will be Python, JavaScript, and Go. Come to the open house for more details. Should be fun!
Global Disease Biology at UC Davis
Open House Time: Thursday, December 24 @ 11 AM
Interests: I am interested in the effect of disease on the environment and how that can impact human health. I am currently interested in going to medical school and possibly pursue a PhD after where I plan to focus on prenatal health. I also have experience in research in evolution/ecology and volunteering and internships at hospitals, I can answer questions about the whole pre-med process and anything about science majors.
EECS at UC Berkeley
Open House Time: Thursday, December 24 @ 2 PM
Interests: Nice to meet you, I’m Jamie, currently a sophomore studying EECS at UC Berkeley. I’ve enjoyed the experiences I’ve gained so far, whether it’s working on a robotics project with my teammates, being a part of the WISE dorm program (Empowering Womxn in STEAM), or joining course staff for two of my favorite classes (the intro EE and CS courses). I’ve also enjoyed spending my free time in exploring the campus and surrounding city, reading all types of new books, and meeting amazing professors. I’d be happy to share about Berkeley specifically or about college in general.
Materials Science and Engineering (B.S.) with a minor in Electronic Materials at Carnegie Mellon Univeristy
Open House Time: Saturday, December 26 @ 3 PM
Interests: I do research in computational materials science, currently targeting materials for quantum computing applications, and am applying to Ph.D. programs in MSE. I have done an internship at IBM Research - Almaden, CA, in the area of spintronics. I have also completed a research experience for undergraduates (REU) at Northwestern University in the field of computational soft matter. At CMU, I am a member of Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society, and am involved with the student advisory council in my department. MSE encompasses many aspects of science and engineering.
B.A. & M.Eng Computer Science @ Cornell University '20
Open House Time: Sunday, December 27 @ 11:30 AM
Interests: Despite entering Cornell interested in biology, I changed paths after really enjoying my coursework in various CS topics (especially related to Natural Language Processing) and law/policy. Outside of class, I was involved in Women in Computing at Cornell, leading the org as co-president in my junior year, and also photographed for the Cornell Daily Sun. The things I loved most about college was going to random guest talks, running into Bill Nye (come through if you want to hear the story), and spending time with friends. I also spent 2 semesters researching in different labs (first, a computational genetics one, and then the People Aware Computing Lab), and can speak to that as well.
If you are interested in participating in the program, please register using this form.
Further details about the program will be sent to registered students via Discord.
Mentors will give presentations throughout the week about their major and answer any questions high schoolers may have. Feel free to drop in to as many as you would like.
High schoolers may work with mentors to develop new skills or learn new concepts about their desired majors over Discord.
The Discord server will remain open if students would like to continue asking questions, but officers will no longer be hosting activities.
